List Of Highly Controversial VGMA Winners || The 21st edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards took place over the weekend to reward musicians in Ghana for their hard work and take local music to the top.
Deserving individuals and groups were awarded, as the award scheme was based on a 30 percent vote by the Board and a 70 percent vote by the public.
Although the music awards was very smooth and successful, some controversy emerged about some of the awards and their winners.
According to the rants of some fans, some artists did not deserve to win those awards because there were better people who were supposed to win them.
2020 VGMA Best Rapper Of The Year
Kwesi Arthur, who was nominated alongside Eno Barony, Sarkodie, Medikal, Strongman and Teephlow, won the Best Rapper of the Year award. Many fans claim that the award should have gone either to Eno Barony, Sarkodie or Medikal. Others also argued that Kwesi Arthur was not a rapper, so it was not sufficient to win that category.
2020 VGMA Album Of The Year
KiDi’s Sugar album won the Album Of The Year award, finishing with King Promise’s ‘As Promised Album,’ Sarkodie’s ‘Black Love’ album, Okyeame Kwame’s ‘Made In Ghana‘ album, Joe Mettle’s ‘Wind Of Resurrection’ album, Nacee’s ‘Time With God’ album, and Kwesi Arthur’s ‘Live From Nkrumah Krom 2’ album. It was the common opinion that Sarkodie was better of the award than any other individual.
2020 VGMA Afrobeats Song Of The Year
DopeNation’s ‘Zanku’ was voted the Afrobeats Song Of The Year’s Album Beating Competition from Wendy Shay, King Promise, E.L., Kelvynboy, KiDi, Kwesi Arthur, Guilty Beats and Darkovibes. Fans claim that Kelvynboy, Kwesi Arthur or Kidi should have won this category because their songs were more popular and important than ‘Zanku.’
2020 VGMA Artiste Of The Year
This was a huge uproar that welcomed Kuami Eugene ‘s announcement as the winner of this category, particularly when he faced competition from the likes of Kofi Kinaata, Diana Hamilton, Sarkodie and Medikal. Many assume that the critical study of the year under review and the work of these artists will point to the fact that Kuami Eugene does not deserve the award. Many claim that Kofi Kinaata or Sarkodie should have won this category because they did much better than Kuami Eugene. Others claim that the other artists have been robbed or that Charterhouse has been bribed to present this award to Kuami Eugene, who even after winning it said ‘I didn’t expect it.’
In all, just like any award scheme, there would certainly be people who felt robbed or humiliated or, better yet, denied what they deserved. The debate around the whole VGMA 2020 has begun and the debates will continue until nothing remains to be said.
However, congratulations to all those who won, and better luck to all who were not fortunate enough to win, no matter how good they were.
