It was unfortunate Sonnie Badu didn’t congratulate any gospel VGMA winner – Celestine Donkor

Gospel musician Celestine Donkor seems to side with gospel presenter OB Nartey that it was wrong for Sonnie Badu to have neglected his gospel folk to congratulate Kuami Eugene for his VGMA Artiste of the Year win.

OB Nartey, a broadcaster at Vision 1 FM had complained that Sonnie Badu, who called Kuami Eugene his ‘son’, had sent out a congratulatory message to him, without acknowledging other gospel musicians that also won awards at the ceremony.

OB, in an interview with Citi FM’s Kwame Dadzie, had expected that Sonnie Badu, who is revered in the gospel music industry, would throw some spotlight on the gospel artistes too.

According to OB Nartey, he was not worried about Kuami Eugene’s commendation. He was just not happy Sonnie, could not do the same for the people who really belong to the same ministry with him.

Responding to the issue on TV3’s ‘Simply Showbiz’ with MzGee, Celestine Donkor who won Female Vocal Artiste of the Year and Gospel Song f the year at the 2020 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards said Sonnie could have done better.

According to her, the only way to help promote the gospel music industry is for the gospel folk to support each other.

“It is just nice; morally right, and socially nice to throw your weight behind colleagues who are excelling. As a legend as he is it is so highly expected of him. I call this ‘nhwehwe animu’. It’s really with the gospel folks,” she said.

She said as Christians there are expectations from people but there are cliques in the gospel fraternity who only support those they have personal relationships with and even foreign artistes they have nothing to do with.

She added Sonnie “has the right to choose who to celebrate but it’s appropriate in the sight of God and in the honor of the gospel industry which we are all part of to celebrate each other. It is nice.”
